HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) and SSCC (Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking) are two forms of failure that pose a great threat to metallic materials in specific corrosive environments. The HIC SSCC flanges are high-performance flanges specifically designed to address such corrosion issues.

 

HIC occurs when a metal absorbs hydrogen atoms in a wet hydrogen sulfide environment. These hydrogen atoms accumulate at the internal defects of the material and combine to form hydrogen molecules, generating a huge internal stress that ultimately leads to the cracking of the material.

 

As for SSCC, it is caused by the combined action of a hydrogen sulfide-containing medium and tensile stress. Under these conditions, the sulfide film on the surface of the metal ruptures, triggering an electrochemical reaction between the base metal and hydrogen sulfide. This reaction generates hydrogen atoms that penetrate into the interior of the metal, thereby initiating stress corrosion cracking.
