Structural Features
Composition: A loose flange usually consists of a loose flange ring and a matching stub end or flanged edge. The flange ring can move back and forth on the stub end or flanged edge, forming a loose structure.
Sealing Surface Forms: Common sealing surface forms include flat face (FF), raised face (RF), male and female face (MFM), tongue and groove face (TG), etc., to meet the sealing requirements under different working conditions.
Working Principle
The loose flanges connect two flange rings together through bolts. When the bolts are tightened, the flange rings will squeeze the gasket in the middle, causing the gasket to undergo elastic deformation, thus filling the gap between the flange sealing surfaces and achieving the purpose of sealing. Since the flange ring can move relative to the stub end or flanged edge, it can compensate to a certain extent for the thermal expansion, contraction of the pipeline, as well as installation errors, etc., reducing the stress concentration in the pipeline system.
Advantages
Easy Installation: The installation process of loose flanges is relatively simple. There is no need for complex welding operations like integral flanges, which reduces the installation difficulty and workload. It is especially suitable for situations where the on-site installation conditions are relatively harsh.
Displacement Compensation: It can adapt to a certain degree of axial displacement, radial displacement, and angular displacement of the pipeline, providing good protection for the stability and safety of the pipeline system.
Material Saving: Compared with integral flanges, the flange rings of loose flanges usually use materials of a lower grade, while the stub ends or flanged edges are selected with corresponding materials according to the pipeline material. In this way, under the premise of ensuring the service performance, precious metal materials can be saved and the cost can be reduced.
Disadvantages
Limited Pressure-bearing Capacity: It is generally suitable for medium and low-pressure pipeline systems. Under high-pressure working conditions, due to the characteristics of the loose structure, the sealing performance may be affected, and special sealing measures need to be taken.
Large Space Occupancy: Compared with some compact flange connection methods, the overall size of loose flanges is relatively large, and the space it occupies needs to be considered during pipeline layout.
Application Areas
Chemical Pipelines: In chemical production, various corrosive media and flammable and explosive media are often transported. The corrosion resistance and good sealing performance of loose flanges can meet the safety operation requirements of chemical pipelines.
Oil Pipelines: During the processes of oil extraction, refining, and transportation, the pipeline system needs to withstand different pressures and temperatures. Loose flanges can adapt to the thermal expansion and contraction of the pipeline to ensure the reliability of pipeline connections.
