Slip-on Plate Flange (PL): It is convenient to obtain materials, simple to manufacture, low in cost and widely used. However, it has poor rigidity and shall not be used in chemical process piping systems with requirements for flammability, explosiveness, and high vacuum degree, as well as in situations with high and extremely hazardous levels. The sealing surface types include flat surface and raised surface, and it is widely used in basic engineering such as chemical industry, construction, water supply, and drainage.
Slip-on Welding Neck Flange (SO): It is a flange in which steel pipes, pipe fittings, etc. are inserted into the flange and connected to the equipment or pipeline through fillet welds. Due to the presence of a short neck, the strength of the flange is improved, and its bearing capacity is enhanced, enabling it to be used for pipelines with higher pressures. However, compared with the slip-on plate flange, it has a higher cost and is more prone to being bumped during transportation.
Butt-welding Neck Flange (WN): It has a tapered neck and is butt-welded to the cylinder or pipeline, belonging to the integral type of flange. Due to the transitional structure of the tapered neck and the butt-welding connection, the strength and rigidity of the flange are strengthened, and its sealing performance is better than that of the slip-on welding flange. However, it needs to be manufactured from forgings, which consumes a large amount of materials and incurs high manufacturing costs. It is suitable for occasions with high pressure, high temperature, or high requirements for sealing.
Integral Flange (IF): It is often made into one piece with equipment, pipes, pipe fittings, valves, etc., and is mostly used in pipelines with higher pressures. Generally, it has a raised surface (RF). In flammable, explosive, highly and extremely hazardous operating conditions, the sealing surface forms of male and female surface (MFM) and tongue and groove surface (TG) can be selected.
Socket-welding Flange (SW): The end of the pipe is inserted into the stepped part of the flange ring, and welding is carried out at the pipe end and on the outer side. There are two types: with a neck and without a neck. The socket-welding flange with a neck has good rigidity, small welding deformation, and good sealing performance. It can be used in occasions with a pressure of 1.0 - 10.0MPa, and is often used in pipelines with PN ≤ 10.0MPa and DN ≤ 40. It is suitable for industries such as boiler pressure vessels, petroleum, and chemical industry.
Threaded Flange (Th): It is connected to the pipeline by threads and can be treated as a loose flange during the design. Its advantage is that there is no need for welding, and the additional torque generated on the cylinder or pipeline when the flange deforms is very small. Its disadvantage is that the flange is thick and the cost is relatively high. It is suitable for the connection of high-pressure pipelines and can also be used on pipelines where welding is not allowed on-site.
Blind Flange (BL): It has no hole in the middle and is used to block the pipeline opening. Its function is similar to that of a head and a pipe cap, but the blind plate seal is a detachable sealing device. The sealing surface forms include flat surface, convex surface, male and female surface, tongue and groove surface, and ring joint surface. It is mainly used to completely isolate the production medium to prevent the production from being affected by the poor closure of the shut-off valve, and even to avoid causing accidents.
