Structural Features The loose flange is composed of a flange ring that is loosely sleeved on the pipeline and a short section that is welded or threaded to the pipeline. The flange ring can rotate freely on the short section, which makes the installation and disassembly of the flange more convenient. There is no need to install and disassemble it as a whole like a common flange. Connection Methods Connection with the Pipeline: There are various connection methods between the short section and the pipeline. Commonly seen ones are welding and threaded connection. For the welding connection, the short section and the pipeline are firmly connected together through the welding process. This method is suitable for pipeline systems under various pressure and temperature conditions. For the threaded connection, the short section and the pipeline are connected through threads. The installation and disassembly are relatively convenient, but it is generally suitable for low-pressure and small-diameter pipeline systems. Connection with Other Components: There are bolt holes on the flange ring of the loose flange. The flange ring is connected to the flanges on other equipment or pipelines through bolts to achieve the sealing and connection of the pipeline system. Advantages Convenient Installation: Since the flange ring can rotate on the short section, during the installation process, it is easier to adjust the position of the bolt holes, which is convenient for aligning and connecting with other components, reducing the installation time and workload. Stress Reduction: The loose flange can compensate for the thermal expansion and contraction of the pipeline to a certain extent, reducing the stress concentration in the pipeline system. When the pipeline expands or contracts due to temperature changes, the flange ring can rotate relative to the short section, thus relieving the stress at the connection between the pipeline and the flange and improving the stability and reliability of the pipeline system. Material Saving: The flange ring of the loose flange generally uses materials different from those of the pipeline, usually corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel or non-ferrous metals, while the short section can use ordinary carbon steel materials. In this way, while meeting the corrosion resistance requirements of the pipeline system, the usage amount of valuable materials is saved, and the cost is reduced. Disadvantages Relatively Weak Sealing Performance: Compared with integral flanges, the sealing performance of loose flanges is slightly worse. Because there is a certain gap between the flange ring and the short section, leakage may occur under harsh conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, or corrosive media. Limited Load-bearing Capacity: The structural characteristics of the loose flange make its load-bearing capacity relatively low. It is generally suitable for pipeline systems with low pressure and small diameter. In high-pressure and large-diameter pipeline systems, special designs or strengthening measures are required to ensure its sealing performance and load-bearing capacity. Scope of Application Loose flanges are commonly used in pipeline systems of industries such as chemical engineering, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, and food, especially in situations where high corrosion resistance is required and pipeline installation and maintenance are frequent. For example, in some pipelines transporting corrosive media, using loose flanges can facilitate the replacement of the corroded flange ring without having to replace the entire flange and pipeline, reducing the maintenance cost. In addition, in some pipeline systems that need to be frequently disassembled and assembled, such as laboratory pipeline systems or some temporarily built pipeline systems, the convenient installation of loose flanges also makes them widely used.
